Community Schools

One early model of Community Schools started in the mid-1990s with the Los Angeles Unified School District. “Brenda Funches and I developed a plan to bring healthcare resources into Head Start Centers in LA, through a partnership with Blue Cross, Delta Sigma Theta and Head Start Centers. That’s when I learned about how LA Unified was partnering with community organizations to create schools as community hubs.”

The Community Schools movement represents a practical and exciting model for building on community assets through powerful partnerships. These partnerships create system change that makes lives better for students, families and teachers – and transforms school systems. Schools can become active hubs for learning, discovery, and bringing needed resources to families.
